Looking for something to keep hands busy at productive work? Looking to contribute to the work of Goodsoil at the upcoming churchwide assembly?
Whether you are a leader / member of an RIC congregation or other RIC setting or you are a member of Lutherans Concerned, The Network for Inclusive Vision, or Wingspan Ministry of St Paul-Reformation, you can contribute significantly to the advocacy and graceful engagement work at the ELCA churchwide assembly by providing a prayer shawl.
These shawls will be for use in the chapel area and to remind participants to prayerfully consider every issue.
Many people are now engaged in making shawls, but more are still needed.
The shawls can be quilted, woven, crocheted, or knit.
The size should be about 72" x 18". The design is left up to the person creating the piece. They can be as simple or elaborate as desired, with or without fringe, and of any color — the intent is to have a wide variety of individually-colored, but not rainbow-colored, shawls.
You can go to Goodsoil for project / pattern information. If you as an individual or an RIC setting are unable to contribute a shawl but would like to participate in the project, you are invited to make a monetary donation and a shawl will be created and tagged in your name. Congregations are asked to have a service of blessing for the shawl(s) before sending them.
Our hope is to have every RIC congregation, as well as many members of the organizations that are part of Goodsoil, and any others who wish to contribute represented through the prayer shawls.
If you are like Glenda Bumpus, Project Director for the prayer shawls, addicted to crocheting (or quilting, weaving, or knitting), this is a project made for you. Even if you are not addicted, you can help.
Glenda says that, if her body is idle, her hands are busy. Reflecting on why she does this work, Glenda said, "My intent is that those who receive the work of my hands should feel hugged. They should feel surrounded by love and care from their family, friends, and even strangers who wish them well.
"I now find myself crocheting prayers shawls for use during the 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. I would hope that the love, care and prayers for wisdom that I meditate on while making these shawls would transfer to the user. I want all in the LGBT community to know that this ally wishes them understanding, compassion, and patience. My prayer is that all who contribute shawls and all who wear them find a common bond of love."
