Something you can do right now for Churchwide

…and you can get others doing it, too

The Unitarian Church of Evanston (UCE) recently hosted an RIC training for LC/NA in the Chicago area. Their volunteers wore beautiful hand knit scarves to designate for us who they were. In discussions over the weekend, this effective visual imagery came into the discussion and the end result was the church's knitting and crocheting group, Common Threads, volunteered to make as many of these scarves as we needed for the Churchwide Assembly. Emily courageously asked for 500! And they agreed! Please find below directions. Share it with any group or person who would like to help these groups out. They each can be totally unique. It is all fine and good to have inter-denominational help… but we should do some ourselves.

Yarn: Red Heart Supersaver Multicolor; the color is Mexicana (0950).

Knitting Instructions:

Any size between 3 to 6 inches across and 48 to 68 inches long.
For straight knit on size 10 and 11 needles cast on 10–14 stitches. Everyone is welcome to use whatever stitches, patterns, etc. you wish for these… it is a great project for trying out something new! Favorite to date is made with seed stitch, cast on 13 stitches on 10.5 needles alternate stitches (knit, pearl) beginning with Knit on each row.

Crochet Instructions:

  • H hook (can use larger or smaller depending on size of stitch desired)
  • Triple Crochet (TC) in 5th ch from hook and in ea ch across
  • Ch 4, turn, TC in ea st across; at the end of the row work last TC in top of turning ch*
  • *repeat until desired width is reached

Make as many chains as you think will create a stole between 40 and 60 inches in length. Width can be anywhere between 3 and 6 inches.

A nice personal touch is to add a tag with the name of the craftsperson to the scarf: Lovingly knitted by… or whatever words you wish to use.

Peace,
