Update on the results of ELCA Synod Assemblies thus far

As of May 16, thirteen synods have held their assemblies. Four of them did not consider memorials to the Churchwide Assembly related to same-gender-partnered ministers.

Four synod assemblies (Sierra Pacific, South-Central Wisconsin, Southeastern Pennsylvania, and Northeastern Minnesota) passed the memorial that seeks to direct amendments to the policy on same-gender-partnered ministers eliminating the exclusion of clergy in same-gender relationships. South-Central Wisconsin also passed a welcoming motion. Our thanks to members of LC/NA and our allies who organized, spoke at microphones, built relationships, and brought their personal witness and prayers to these synod assemblies.

One synod assembly (Southeast Michigan) passed a moderate variant of the memorial endorsing restraint. Since the deadline for resolutions from congregations had already passed when the goodsoil legislative package was released, LC members and allies worked miracles to get this memorial on the floor.

Three synod assemblies (Eastern Washington-Idaho, North Texas-North Louisiana, and Florida-Bahamas) considered and defeated one or both of these memorials. Still congratulations are due to the members and allies in all three synods who hosted hospitality suites and organized to bring memorials forward. Consistent and continuous graceful presence will prevail over time even in more conservative synods.

Finally, two synods (North Texas-North Louisiana and Eastern North Dakota) passed a memorial seeking to delay any changes to the policy until the 2009 Churchwide Assembly.

There are eight synod assemblies this coming weekend (May 18–20). A full one-third of the synod assemblies in the weekend between May 31 and June 4, and almost another third meet the following weekend (June 7–10). Your continued prayers are requested.
