St John's Lutheran in Atlanta establishes fund to defray hearing related expenses
St John's Lutheran Church, Atlanta, Georgia has established "The Policy is the Problem" Fund to help defray expenses related to the defense of their pastor, the Rev Bradley Schmeling, who has been charged with conduct incompatible with the office of the ministry because he is in a committed same-gender relationship of mutuality, fidelity and respect.
"In our view, the root cause of this disciplinary action is the church's rule not Pastor Bradley. The policy is the problem," said Laura Crawley, president of the congregation. "We support our pastor, whose ministry has been and is a powerful gift to our congregation. We are happy that he has found a life partner. We intend to stand with him through the hearing and beyond."
With charges officially filed earlier in August, preparations are currently underway for appointment of a 12-person committee that will serve as the "jury" for a disciplinary hearing later this fall. Once the committee has been appointed, the hearing will commence within 60 days. Following the end of the hearing, a judgment must be rendered within 15 days.
Many members of Lutherans Concerned have written with offers of support for Pastor Schmeling and the congregation. Be assured that LC/NA is walking with Bradley and St John's in a spirit of accompaniment. Your prayers are requested. Also, if you are interested in helping St John's Lutheran by donating to "The Policy is the Problem" Fund, you may do so by check mailed to St John's Lutheran Church, 1410 Ponce de Leon Ave, Atlanta, GA 30307, noting the name of the fund in the memo line.
